"With the weather ruining the NOBS season so far, and with no points on the board yet, it was good to see a squad of 15 make the trip to Bristol to take on Filton High Veterans.
With Andy Chandler making a comeback after not playing for over a year, plus the Cross brothers Stewart, Richard and David all returning to the Northern jersey it was was, on paper at least, the strongest team the NOBS had fielded all season.
However it was a case of reverting to type early on, as poor quality passing led to several chances being gifted to Filton, although Matt Kerkhoff and Dave Cross were unlucky not to find the net, Filton took the lead when Jack Evans gave away a needless free kick and the floated ball into the box while looking suspiciously offside was not flagged by the NOBS man on the flag and a flick header found the net for 1-0 to Filton.
Northern did manage to equalise in the second half from a rare passage of decent passing, Kerkhoff found himself on the goalline, chipping over for Dave Cross to tuck home at the back post.
Northern then rode their luck, gifting too many passes back to Filton and leaving acres of space, we were fortunate not to be behind, but once again, a few sensible passes made space for Aaron Skinner down the left, he cut into the box took a shot which fell nicely for Dave Cross to tuck home the winner.
Despite Gareth 'Wolfie' Nobrega taking the walk of shame due to needless abuse of the ref, the NOBS held on to claim a slightly lucky win."
Filton High Vets Report:
" Great weather at last , Shame the result didn’t match , a 1-2 defeat was a hard one to take after creating several clear cut chances which we didn’t convert against a young looking Cardiff side . "
