Lyde Green Veterans Report;

"Lyde Green Vets maintained their push at the top of Div 5 with a straightforward if at times a bit heart in mouth 8-2 victory over Jamrock Vets. A lovely morning for footy, Lyde got to the ground prepared and ready for the scheduled 10:30 kick off. Warmed up and ready to go but no opponents to be seen. After phone calls and searching around, Jamrock players slowly began to arrive in dribs and drabs. The last person to turn up? The guy with the kit of course! So after another light warm up, it was game on at 11:15…. A pretty even opening with Lyde stable at the back and creating chances (but not taking them) in attack, but we were still thankful to Mike in goal on the one occasion Jamrock got through, sweeping superbly and clearly winning the ball and in no way denying a clear goalscoring opportunity……. It was a decent wake-up call for Lyde who soon established control and went in front as strikes from Andy and Chris gave us a 2-0 lead with Ian and Doughtz running their socks off in behind them. Unfortunately, as we continued to fluff a few more chances, Jamrock got their tails up and got back to 2-1 before their winger “beat Mike to a cross” to tap home from close range. Lyde were momentarily shocked so looked to Doughtz for a moment of magic who volleyed home a cracking Chris corner just before the break. With Martin putting in a shift closing down Jamrock defenders, Carter chatting his usual inspirational junk and Tokes making new friends, Lyde got in at the break a goal up. The Gaffer’s inspirational half time team talk seemed to fall on deaf ears as Jamrock came out pretty strong at the start of the second half, Lyde dropping deeper and deeper to try and deal with being overrun by attackers. That said, they dealt with it well and that’s when the counter attacks started. A big route one smash down field by Mike put Andy in the clear to make it 4 before Gaffer got the bit between his teeth and stole in front of the Jamrock wide man to punt the ball forward, resulting in Andy getting through one on one to make it 5. Andy pretty much took over from this point, making it 6 and 7 and wrapping up the match before the moment the entire squad celebrated more than any other. Gaffer fed Big Phil who, with absolute panic and a look of shock on his face, rifled home from 12 yards. We also witnessed Colin get nailed by a Colin-esque challenge resulting in an early departure for our Northern talisman and our tally chart on the number of times Jordan kicks the ball first time was getting so high, we ran out of fingers to count them on! All in all a game played in just about the right spirit after the shambolic pre match, with Lyde looking to push on and hope for a bit of luck elsewhere in the next matches."
