LB Vets Report;

"Talk about a topsy turvy game – LB & Cardiff produced a nine goal thriller at SBL on a cold crisp morning. We welcomed back Matty at centre back for his first game in 8 years and Benno for his first in 2. LB had the best of the early exchanges and took the lead when Craig had a run in on goal, the keeper saving the initial shot and then putting in the rebound. Forwards Craig and Benno were a handful throughout and we had a couple of other near misses in the first 20 including a free kick from Craig which clipped the bar. Cardiff equalised from a corner with a decent finish after a period of pressure. After about 35 Cardiff took the lead when LB gave the ball away in midfield and a quick move resulted in a great header. Within no time Cardiff increased their lead, working the ball from one side to the other where their unmarked winger slotted home, oops! Half time and we were 3-1 down, not going to plan! The half time team talk involved a handbags session between Hookie & Benno and maybe that fired both of them up for the second half. It was fairly end to end early doors. The short chopsy number 8 for Cardiff was a good player and involved in everything, with some excellent free kick deliveries. We gradually got into it with Craig scoring a second for 3-2 and then Benno glancing a header in for the equaliser midway through the half. Game continued to be played at a good tempo with both sides going close. Cardiff then scored with 8 minutes left, double oops. We pressed and a good interchange in midfield led to Craig slotting a ball through to meet Benno’s well timed run and he coolly slotted past the excellent keeper for the equaliser. Last couple now and Cardiff broke down our right but the cross went too long. Our winger flicked the ball over the onrushing forward and put Craig away on the right flank. He galloped forward and then pulled the ball back towards the edge of the box to Hookie, who’d had a quiet game by his standards, for a nicely finished goal and 5-4 – Wow, just wow. Despite some more Cardiff pressure we saw out the last couple for victory. That was a great advert for Vets football and maybe a little harsh on Cardiff to lose, but we’ll take it. We always enjoy playing against Gareth and his boys, hard but fair, no little skill on show and then handshakes all round at the end. Good luck for the rest of the season boys. "
