LB Vets Report;

"A cold and breezy Sunday morning in south Bristol, perfect for a Vets game of footy. The day started well as Hookie who had keys and kit was surprisingly on time, wow. We kept the same formation, 4 5 1 with Hookie slotting in the hole, Simon back up top and little Chris in the middle to do Matt D’s running. Game started a bit scrappy, we couldn’t string any passes together, took a while to get organised, making it worse, Chew went one up after about 15 minutes with a wonder strike from outside the box (even the Chew players were surprised)… 0 – 1 Doh. This got us going and we started to get hold of the ball and get the passing game moving, a few speculative shots and lots of possession in the Chew area resulted in Hookie in a bit of space hitting a reasonable shot which trickled under their huge keeper for a fortunate 1 – 1. We were playing better, getting joy down the wings with Nick and Pete, little Chris was busy and Matt D was knackered as usual. A good move down the left found Little Chris in the box and he smacked it in off the post for 2 – 1 LB, Yay. A goal a game little Chris, good work!! Chew were always busy, closing us down, but we worked down the right, squared back to Simon in the box he took a touch and smacked it in for his first for us and 3 – 1 LB at half time. Team talk consisted of keep it tight at the back and counter quick, so we kicked off, passed it to Nige (new on at LFB) for him to have an awful touch, Chew nipped the ball from him for a little dink to their striker all on his own at the back post for 3 – 2 doh. So much for the half time team talk. One minute later we were sloppy with our passing and positional play, missed a few chances to clear the ball, their winger came down the left and floated a ball in for a tap in 3- 3 DOH. Game was even for a bit, could of gone either way, but we got ourselves sorted and broke down the left, Pete jinked around a few Chew lads and slotted in from a narrow angle to make it 4 – 3 Yay. Chew had a few chances and better finishing may have made it really interesting, but thankfully Hookie nipped in from the half way line broke the Chew defence and ran through one on one with the keeper to make it 5 – 3 phew. One minute to go and a back post Chew header was somehow cleared off the line and over the bar by Cotts left toe. Phew. Final whistle, handshakes all around and back to the tent for a beer. Following our recent matches against a few of the top sides, where the Corinthian ethos is somewhat missing, it was refreshing to have such a great game, from start to finish the game was played the right way, good friendly banter an absolute pleasure to play against a side who understand how Vets match should be played and enjoyed. If the league are still trying to Champion the Corinthian approach then Division 1 needs more teams like Chew Magna. Thank you for the game gentlemen, really hope to see you next season and best of luck for the rest of the season. "
