Cribbs Vets Report;

"Our first league game started with great promise in bright sunshine and whilst it was a competitive and enjoyable contest, it was ultimately a frustrating defeat. A few new recruits increased the numbers so that the late arrival of Yells and Christian took us to 15 players. Though with no ref, I very reluctantly took charge of the whistle. We started brightly and put some decent passing moves together. Bathelona couldn't gain a foothold and anything they hit long was dealt with. Paul Ainsworth in goal was comfortable to receive the ball from the back four and decent in his distribution. There was a scare after 10 minutes when a hopeful long ball seemed easy to deal with but waiting for it to come into the penalty area, Paul allowed a striker to steal possession but the chance was quickly snuffed out. Matt Shaughnessy, making his debut, was an influence from centre mid. An exchange of passes saw him clear though his attempted chip didn't really trouble their keeper. After 15 minutes, a great pass from Dan Scoins saw Matt again clear and with the recent practice he successfully lofted a finish over the advancing keeper for us to take the lead. The pattern was set for much of the first half. We created chances, forced corners and looked assured in possession. After 35 minutes an attack prompted by a great driven pass by Matt culiminated in a shot from Andy Paraskeva that went narrowly wide. A second goal eluded us and in the last five minutes of the half Bathelona enjoyed a better spell. A ball lost in midfield was moved forward quickly to the edge of our box. Paul Ainsworth got hands to the long shot but the force of the strike took it over the line. 1-1 at half-time. In the second half we lost the control we had on the game. Our passing was not as good and we became stretched and Bathelona exploited the greater distances between our players. Though when we put a few passes together we were still a threat and a couple of quick breaks nearly delivered the goals that coud have secured a win. One in particular saw a great strike from Matt come directly back to him off the post, his second effort was cleared off the line and with his third attempt he chipped a cross that was cleared. Just after an hour our keeper restarted quickly to Woody at centre-back, though an alert striker robbed the ball and converted an easy finish. We were now having to defend for longer periods as they created more chances. They had a goal disallowed for offside. With just over 10 minutes left, they converted another chance to make it 3-1 to them. We pressed for a goal but the energy and numbers committed forward didn't have the fluency and precision of the first half. In the last few minutes it got a bit fractious and I sent off off one of their players - for the unusual offence of not hitting Stan as hard as he should have done given the provocation - you what Stan is like. I should have also sent Stan off, but there was a minute left and I couldn't be bothered to listen to his inevitable complaints. "
